Attention Before you read this post, I highly recommend you check out my resources page for access to the tools and services I use to not only maintain my system but also fix all my computer errors, by clicking here!

Error 0x80244018 is an issue that occurs with the Windows Update component when an end user attempts to update their system. Typically, the Microsoft update server will receive the request for an update, however, the server becomes inundated (for whatever reason), this results in an inability (for Windows Update) to access the update files.

The general cause of this issue can be a multitude of things, all of which I intend to discuss further in this tutorial.

Windows Update is an integral component of all iterations of Microsoft’s operating systems. It’s this one components task to keep your system up-to-date with the latest fixes and security updates – which theoretically protects it from the latest security threats.

However, there are instances when this component fails, and instead of updating your system (as it should), it throws up an error message.

If you encounter error 0x80244018 for the first time, you’re immediate reaction should be to restart your system and re-try the update process. Maybe Microsoft’s update servers were busy at that particular time. However, if the same error reappears, only then should you consider a solution for it.

What Causes Windows Update Error 0x80244018?

When looking at error 0x80244018, we find that there are several factors involved when looking at potential causes. The most common of which are outlined below:

  • Third-party internet security tool blocking Windows Update: The primary objective of any security tool is to protect your system from malicious attacks. However, there are instances when such tools can become, too intrusive, that is they block certain components and apps from working – as a security precaution. It’s possible that, that is what is happening here.
  • BIT service has been disabled: BIT or Background Intelligent Transfer Service, is an integral component of Windows Update. Ultimately, it’s this components responsibility to download the files from Microsoft’s update servers to your system. Thus, if this service is disabled, then you’ll be unable to download the latest updates.
  • Corrupted Windows system files: Your Windows operating system has a number of files that are integral to the operation of its various key components. In the event that one or more of these files have been corrupted – possibly due to the infiltration of a malicious file (virus); there’s a chance they could belong to the Windows Update component.
  • Proxy or VPN problem: The purpose of a proxy is to mask your IP address while surfing the internet, VPNs on the other hand, secure your traffic. However, studies show that they have been known to increase your chances of spam, virus attacks, and the like. They can also prevent Windows update from working.

Other less common causes are as follows:

  • Your system has no internet connection.
  • The Windows Update server is down.

Now we’ve gotten a handle on the potential causes of error 0x80244018, let’s take a look at the various ways you can resolve it.

If the error reappears after the restart, then it’s time to buckle down and look at various ways you can fix it.

The next solution I’d like to highlight, involves disabling or uninstalling your current third-party internet security tool.

If Windows Update is unable to make a connection to the outside updates server, it’s possible your security tool is the cause. To eliminate this, as a possible cause, you should consider disabling or uninstalling your security tool.

To do that, simply right-click on its icon, in the Taskbar. Typically situated in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Then select Disable.

Note: Exact instructions will vary, depending on the brand and version of your security tool. Some security tools have disable features, while others do not. In which case, you may be forced to remove the tool – at least temporarily, to check whether or not it is to blame.
